Since cancer patients from North Karnataka had to travel either to Bombay or madras for treatment in those days, many of them avoided therapy due to Social taboo, distance, cost, accommodation and language issues. Keeping this in mind, Dr. R.B. Patil wanted to make the cancer treatment acceptable, accessible and affordable. With this intent, cancer hospital was planned in Navanagar, Hubbali and foundation stone was laid by then Chief minister of Karnataka Shree Devaraj Urs.
Karnatak Cancer Therapy and Research Institute Hubballi- comprehensive cancer care center was established in 1977 and was inaugurated by then-Vice -President of India Shree B.D Jatti. The institute included a Cobalt Radiotherapy unit, well equipped OT, Pathologyand chemotherapy section along with chatra and Annadana. The Goal was to provide affordable treatment, free food and accommodation for the patients.
As per institute statistics, more than one lakh new patients has been treated in KCTRI from time of its inception . To provide advance technological investigations like CT, MRI, Nuclear scans for the people of north Karnataka region, he established NMR scan center in Hubballi.
LATE Padmashree Dr. R.B Patil was born on 30th November 1926 to Shri Basappagouda Aadappagouda Patil and Smt. Kantamma. His mother was handicapped by polio and he lost his father to plague at the age of 7 years. Due to this instances, he had firm belief that education and health care system is the basic need of everyone.
His primary schooling was similar to Gurukula system of learning and he joined Siddeshwara high school at Bijapur and won district level monthly scholarship which included cash prize and it continued till his MBBS. He passed matriculation with distinction and joined Karnataka arts and science college of Dharwad, passed out from there with first class. His maternal uncle motivated him to be a doctor,soon he joined Seth G.S Medical college, Bombay and did his MBBS in 1951. After this he went abroad and cleared final FRCS from Edinburgh and also FRCS from London in 1956.
Upon returning to India, he wanted to serve the community, so he joined as chief medical officer in co-operative hospital, Hubballi and worked there for 12 years and also worked in TB sanatorium Mal-samudra, Gadag. He was inducted as a fellow of inter-national college of surgeon(FICS) for his long standing surgical skills.Late Dr. R.B. Patil was a honorary professor and unit chief in department of surgery, Karnataka medical college (KIMS), Hubballi and he taught post graduate students for 12 years . He was a senate member for five years in Karnataka University, Dharwad, and was awarded doctor of science (DSC) by the university.
For his dedicated work in the field of medicine, LATE Dr. R.B Patil was awarded Padmashree in 1969.
To serve the poor, he established R.B.PATIL nursing home in vidyanagar Hubballi which was inaugurated by then Chief minister of Karnataka Shree Veerendra Patil.
